Not many things get a surprised look faster than telling your patients that Glucosamine is a sugar. The second surprise comes when you explain that eating Glucosamine is a lot different from letting your own cells produce it naturally.

Let’s look at the tradeoffs. On the one hand, we have seen an endless parade of pro-Glucosamine books and articles for the past nine years. Also, Glucosamine is cheap to produce… it is only 1/10th the cost of high-quality Chondroitin sulfate. For these reasons alone, it is hard to find an arthritis-support formula that is not loaded with Glucosamine.

The tradeoff is that Glucosamine may aggravate a variety of illnesses. Let me give you two examples. Glucosamine is a simple sugar that normally is made in your cells. Unlike the Glucosamine your cells make, Glucosamine you take orally pours into your G.I. tract and then into your blood stream, where yeast and fungi can feed on it. In other words, the Glucosamine made naturally in your cells follows a far different pathway from the Glucosamine you get from a bottle.

Why does this matter? It matters because yeast and fungi use sugars, including Glucosamine, as a source of energy. Furthermore, because Glucosamine is a component of their cell walls, yeast and fungi can use Glucosamine as a building block to help them reproduce. This can cause an overgrowth and flare-up of Candidiasis symptoms. But there is more.

The second problem linked to Glucosamine is insulin resistance. a predisposing condition for diabetes. Your body naturally produces Glucosamine by way of a sequence called the hexasomine pathway. This pathway contains an important rate-limiting step, like a faucet, that controls your cellular production of Glucosamine. Studies published in both the Journal of Biological Chemistry and Diabetes demonstrate that when Glucosamine bypasses this rate-limiting step, ATP levels can drop, thus mimicking the insulin resistance brought on by high blood-glucose and insulin.

Unfortunately, seniors who are overweight and most prone to insulin resistance are also the population most susceptible to osteoarthritis. Hence, they are also the most likely to be using Glucosamine.

Early research suggested that certain forms of Glucosamine, in combination with Chondroitin sulfate, could reduce the pain and immobility of osteoarthritis. Best-selling books have even been written on this subject.

Then research began confirming early clinical reports that Glucosamine can actually aggravate a variety of illnesses. By contrast, some rather dramatic benefits were being reported for Chondroitin sulfate. Ultimately, the case was settled by a far-reaching analysis published in the highly conservative Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA). This study by McAlindon et al found "large" benefits from Chondroitin sulfate but only "moderate" benefits from Glucosamine.

What does all this mean? For these medical reasons and more, we believe Glucosamine may not be advisable for patients with any of the following:

• Yeast Infections
• Insulin Resistance /Glucose Intolerance
• Allergies
• Weak Immune System

Every move you make conveys mechanical forces through your connective tissues: the ligaments, tendons, bone and smooth cartilage in your joints. This material may look good on paper. but only until more sophisticated testing reveals the truth.

Long before Americans began hearing about Chondroitin sulfate, Europeans recognized its benefits and had begun producing multi-ton quantities by extracting it from bovine trachea. Then Mad-Cow Disease (BSE) hit Europe and threw the entire manufacturing infrastructure into disarray. Most manu-facturers adjusted to the problem by importing bovine trachea from far-removed countries where BSE had not yet been detected.

We took a different approach. From the very beginning, ArthroStat was designed using Chondroitin sulfate from shark. Although top-quality Chondroitin sulfate from shark is more expensive than bovine Chondroitin sulfate, we believe our customers feel better knowing our ingredients are not from bovine sources.

"For years I suffered neck and back pain due to auto accidents and osteoarthritis. This severe pain eventually encompassed my head, similar to a migraine, and the muscles to my shoulders. The back pain is due to two herniated discs in my lower back.
